Water Filtration Additive Better than Iodine

I’m a fan of Mark Rober. His videos are always exceptionally well done and I learn a lot from what he does. This latest video was amazing to me. He discusses clean water, and a product that is relatively inexpensive that is helping 3rd world countries get clean water. In an apocalyptic world, everywhere would be a 3rd world country, so I take note.

The good news is that this stuff isn’t only available to YouTube legends. You can buy this stuff today on Amazon. You better believe I’m putting packets into my 72 hour kit, my bug out bag, my survival kits, and my home storage. My favorite amazon review says, “I drank swamp water and was satisfied.” Based on that, we can safely say that this is a purification additive that is better than iodine.

How it Works

There is a coagulant and a sanitizer. The coagulant collects all the particles in the water like the dirt and algae. It clumps all of this together and sinks it all to the bottom. Then the sanitizer clears the water of bacteria and viruses. At this point it is safe to drink.

Chlorine

If you watch the video, Mark says that these packets contain chlorine. You don’t need to be afraid of chlorine. Lets be honest, you probably ended up drinking some the last time you were at a public pool. Obviously, in high levels, chlorine is bad for you. But, did you know though that chlorine is most likely used to treat your drinking water? It’s true! I have worked in city management in a couple cities and towns and they all have used chlorine to treat your water. Is the P&G packet with chlorine better than iodine? Yes. Its what professionals who treat water on a large scale use.

There are some places that use UV methods of treating the water, or a combination of UV and chlorine, but chlorine is a proven method. In fact, at you local drinking water works department, they use these same methods at a large scale. Coagulants take the particulates (dirt and crap) out of the water, and that’s scraped and cleaned out. The water is then purified, much like how Iodine, boiling, or UV methods would be used, to kill bacteria and viruses. These packets combine all in one. It’s pretty ingenious.
