Machetes are a fantastic tool for brush clearing, limbing trees, cutting grass, or as a defensive weapon. We’ve assembled the list of our best and favorite machetes on Amazon. Our general criteria is that it needs to have good steel, good construction, be a good tool, and be a good defensive option.
7. Gerber Bear Grylls Jungle Parang
This is built with a heavier top making it great for chopping and has a good rubberized handle, making it comfortable to swing. It doesn’t have as good of steel as the others on the list though. It does include some other survival features that many of the bear grills machetes have. Gerber is a decent quality middle of the road blade maker, but I prefer them for their multitools, not their machetes. It’s not a bad option though.
6. Schrade SCHKM1
It has a handle big enough for for accommodating two hands, and like most on this list has a black epoxy coating on the blade to help prevent rusting. I’m not a fan of the decorative holes cut in the blade. In a machete I want the extra weight in the handle for chopping, allowing me to use it like a hatchet. The holes in the blade take away from that chopping weight.
5. Ontario Knife Company 6144
American made and good quality steel. Three are reports of it coming not very sharp, but a machete isn’t very hard to sharpen. This has good quality steel for the price.
4. Kabar Kukri
Kabar is famous for their military knives, but they did extremely well with this machete as well. This machete is built to last, and the Kukri style is fantastic for all your machete uses.
3. Cold Steel
It’s the cold steel. Best bang for your buck. Good quality steel. Cold steel all terrain chopper is good for more heavy duty work. They offer several models including the cutlass, the kukri, a version styled after a Thai sword, and others.
If you buy your man a cold steel sword, he will definitely be excited about it. I bought my brother in-law one of the cold steel sword machetes. He loved it, and caused my mother in law a lot of anxiety as he used it to open most of the rest of his packages and presents with the blade.
2. Woodsman Pal 2.0
If you’re just looking to use your machete to clear brush, this is the one for you. #1 on our list is the best all around machete, but this is the very best brush cutter on the list. It has a good chopping blade and the reverse side has a brush hook which is fantastic for limbing. As a tool, this machete is the very best. As a weapon, it lacks more of the defensive characteristics. If you’re just looking for a tool, this is what you want.
1. Condor Golok
It’s made from 1075 Steel. It’s built well, American made, and features a full tang handle which adds to strength and durability. It also has a really nice walnut handle, which fits well in the hand and just looks really nice. The wooden handle and the high quality steel put this one ahead of the pack and is our go to pick.
