Email All Members of Utah House of Representatives in Opposition to HB295

We at Apocalyptic Prepping are strongly opposed to HB295. We are especially opposed to the trail camera regulations. We know many hunters share these concerns. We’ve compiled a list of every email for the state legislators in the House of Representatives for you to share your concerns so we can kill this bill.

Tips:

We encourage you to copy the list and, using the bcc function in your email, send an email to every single representative, and it will appear that you sent it to each individually.

We would encourage you to start this email with Good Morning, or Good Evening, instead of Dear State Legislator… when sending the email to all of them. Dear State Legislator just sounds too canned and mass produced. Also, be courteous. Don’t be angry at everyone. Many of these people are already on our side, and you don’t want to flip anyone against us, or alienate anyone.

Why We Oppose HB295

Trail Cameras aren’t unethical for hunting: I hunt. I’m also the hunter that gets upset at the stupid hunter that gives other hunters the bad name. I provide meat for my wife and daughter. I love spending time in the mountains. I use trail cameras because I love seeing pictures of wildlife. I use 4 trail cameras. I have never shot an animal that I have seen on my trail camera, though I’ve tried. Trail cameras do help with hunting, but not in the extreme way that this bill is making it seem, and it certainly isn’t unethical.

This bill favors the extremely rich: This bill allows for nonprofits to use trail cameras. This sounds reasonable, until you learn about trail cameras. Someone with a good tax attorney can make a trail camera for “conservation,” and then allow them to use trail cameras, essentially giving themselves an extreme advantage over those who can’t afford the thousands in legal fees. I work for a nonprofit. I know this is very possible. Trail cameras have become less expensive in recent years so the average person like me, who doesn’t make much working for a nonprofit, can afford to use them. Also, If trail cameras go away, big outfitters will be the ones who benefit. They have spotters out in the hills full time finding animals. They are essentially living outfitters. This will only cause the price to go up. Trail cameras actually make the playing field more even.

This bill hurts my family’s livelihood: My family aren’t hunting guides. I have an uncle that uses these to keep track of predators that are around his cattle. I also have a brother that runs a website that posts videos of animals, most of which come from his trail cameras. His website is even called Backyard Trail Camera. This bill hurts their ability to provide for their family.

This bill doesn’t have any data behind it: There is no data showing that trail cameras lead to a higher success rate in hunters. In fact, in the last 5 years, there have been less buck deer harvested (honestly the only big game species I really hunt), while at the same time cameras have become more popular. Furthermore, this bill ignores all the spring hunts. If its unethical for fall deer and elk, why do ethics change for spring bear and turkey hunting? I contend that it isn’t unethical in the spring and it isn’t unethical in the fall.

This bill didn’t go through the proper channels to consult with hunters: This issue was never brought before the RAC. It was decided unilaterally. It has support from several nonprofit groups, largely because nonprofits aren’t affected. The SFW for instance is one of those nonprofits that this bill won’t affect- It just gives them less competition.
