Top 5 Lessons Learned from the Corona Virus Pandemic

From the economy shutting down, a run on toilet paper and water bottles, and a sharp increase in mental health issues, to say nothing of the health consequences and fatalities. Here are the most important lessons learned from the pandemic.

1. Masks are a Survival Tool

Some people think this is a political statement. I’m not getting into that. Scientists say it can help you be protected. That’s enough for me to want some for the end of the world. The gold standard of masks, and what not even health care professionals could keep in stock when all this started were the KN95 mask. I’ve now got some in my 72 hour kit and in my storage.

2. Toilet Paper is Gold

People panic bought toilet paper and water bottles. I think the reason for this is simple- they are comfort staples, but they also are relatively bulky. If you’re drinking your daily recommended amount of water, and doing it in water bottles, you can knock out a case of those pretty quick. I’d recommend setting aside some space for large staples you think you need, such as toilet paper, and paper towels. You don’t need water bottles, but you should have a supply of water stored away as well. I’d also recommend getting your self a couple good water filtration solutions as well as backup. I’ve reviewed a few HERE.

Other bulky items I thought of are:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Breakfast cereal
  • Fire wood
  • Charcoal briquets
  • Potatoes and root vegetables
  • Crackers
  • Chips
  • Beverages

This isn’t a universal list, and some of these items are more poplular than others, but for yourself you should think of the items you wouldn’t want to live without, but don’t have more than a month supply of because they’re big and bulky. These will likely sell out quickly and are more susceptible to a run and scarcity.

3. People get Stir Crazy

People get really tired of being in quarantine. It’s hard on your mental health to sit still. Now imagine this in a post apocalyptic world. If you have to isolate, how are you going to entertain yourself and your family? I’d recommend getting yourself a stash of books, board games, and card games. A ham radio would also be nice. Communication and human interaction are hard for some to go without. These should be considered survival tools. It’s also why I have a deck of cards in my 72 hour kit.

4. Exercise is important

This is not only important for your physical health and keeping your immune system strong, but exercise also helps balance your mental health. Sitting around in quarantine is hard for both your physical and mental health. Remember to exercise.

5. Life goes on

During the pandemic, people still needed food, water, and shelter. People still needed money and employment. People were still people and life still happened. Like any obstacle or challenge, people still need certain things to survive. In an apocalyptic world, there won’t be door dash or amazon to bring you those things. You might need to farm, cut fire wood, or otherwise do chores you might not think of now. The same can be said even if you are sick. You still need food. You still need water. Take precautions, but know that you will die without certain things. Plan accordingly.
